TIC-80 and games – the enjoyable way to learn programming

Everyone knows that the most enjoyable way to learn any programming is by developing a game. However modern games require an advanced technique. So we simplify things by creating games from the early days of visual computing, when computers would plug into TVs, show 16 colors and had just 64KB (yes!) of memory to fool around with. The games back then were much simpler, easier to program and as enjoyable as today. That is where fantasy consoles come in.

2 such consoles stand out – PICO-8 and TIC-80. I prefer the TIC-80 because of the greater resolution and the near 16:9 aspect ratio. Once you download the console, you’ll need a course to learn Lua without boring the hell out of you. I discovered just that – 2 courses that will teach you Lua while making some of the most popular games –

TIC 80 Beginner Tutorial by Potato Imaginator on Youtube and Learn to code Space invaders by Bytes n Bits. While both are very good and easy to understand, I prefer the latter one, because the instructor Bob explains every step quite lucidly.
